What is NOT included?
Round-trip transportation to and from Marseilles (Provence Airport) from your home city, medical expenses, spending money, laundry, telephone, textbooks, art supplies and individual instructional materials are not included.
How to apply
To apply for admission, complete the application form and mail it to the Barat Foundation with a payment of $1,100 ($1,000 deposit plus $100 non-refundable application fee). Ask a teacher or guidance counselor to complete the teacher recommendation form and return it to the Barat Foundation along with a copy of your school transcript. You do not need to wait for the teacher recommendation form before sending in your application, as we will hold a place for you while awaiting the school forms.
Admissions are on a rolling basis therefore we suggest you apply early. Applications are carefully reviewed and students are selected on the basis of their readiness to participate in the program. We make our best efforts to act upon each application within 1 or 2 business days of receipt of the teacher recommendation form and school transcript, and inform applicants of our admissions decision. If for some reason the application is not accepted, the full deposit will be returned.
Program participants are expected to maintain exceptionally high standards of personal behavior. Since students are encouraged within the context of our programs, to take responsibility and to make their own discoveries, students whose parents require them to be under constant surveillance, or who are likely to consume alcohol, drugs, or act irresponsibly, should not apply.
How to make travel arrangements
Students attending the Barat Foundation Summer Program in Provence travel together on group flights arranged by our travel agent, Fred Bomze of Gil Travel, 215-568-6655 x 244. We will send you detailed group flight information in the early spring. If for some reason you cannot travel on the group flight, we still request you coordinate travel arrangements with our travel agent to ensure safe, coordinated travel.
Payment Schedule
A payment of $1,100 ($1,000 deposit plus $100 non-refundable application fee) must accompany your application. The balance is due and payable on or before April 1, 2008. Balances on applications submitted after April 1 are due and payable immediately after the applicant's acceptance into the program.
Security Deposit
The Barat Foundation requires a $300 security deposit from each student. The deposit is to cover the costs of any damage to our accommodation facilities. Providing there is no damage to the facilities, the deposit will be returned following the student’s return to the U.S.
Travel Insurance
Should you desire to purchase travel insurance, we suggest the Travmark Camp/Summer Study Protection Plan. You will receive detailed information upon acceptance into the program.
Refund Policy
If a student applies to the Barat Foundation program and withdraws his or her application prior to April 1, 2008, the $1,000 program deposit will be refunded. Cancellations received after April 1 are not subject to a refund. All cancellations must be made in writing to the Barat Foundation.
There will be no refunds for students who voluntarily withdraw from a Barat Foundation program, nor will there be any refund for any student who is asked to leave the program for use of drugs, abuse of alcohol, or gross disobedience of the rules of the program. Dates, fees, itineraries and courses may be changed without notice should circumstances require. The Barat Foundation reserves the right to cancel any program, and to refuse to accept any person as a member of one of its programs. If the Barat Foundation cancels a program, the full program fee will be refunded.
Who Can Apply?
Any student who has completed 8th through 12th grade is eligible to apply.
Do You Have To Speak French To Participate?
The Barat Foundation accepts students at all levels of French proficiency, from beginners to fluent speakers. All students, no matter what level of French language experience, will have the opportunity to progress with their French language skills, particularly in the areas of listening comprehension and speaking.
Communication
You will receive regular updates via email to keep you up to date on your student's activities in France. Your son or daughter will also have the opportunity to call home (with a calling card), and will have limited access to the internet. In addition, the program director and staff members have cell phones at all times, and are always accessible should an emergency arrive.
Safety
Safety is our first concern. Our staff to student ratio is approximately 1 to 3, and teachers always accompany students on excursions. There is a local doctor available in case of illness, and our facility is located within a short drive to a hospital should an emergency arrive. The medical system in France is excellent and highly accessible. We are extremely proud of our safety record, and will continue to do everything within our means to ensure the safety and well-being of all of our participants.
Scholarship Information
Since its inception, the Barat foundation has offered limited need and merit based scholarships to gifted and talented students from all over the world. To apply for scholarship grants, you must first send us an application form, teacher recommendation form, and current school transcript, along with a letter describing why you want to spend the summer in Provence with the Barat Foundation, and what you hope to accomplish and bring back from your summer experience. Once we are in receipt of your application materials, we will contact you regarding further requirements.
